[ a few hours before curfew, zelkov is in the book cafe with a cup of tea and a pile of whatever books he's been able to find with any information about biology.
he's flipping through them to see if it looks like there's going to be any potentially useful information in any of them, but is quickly coming to the conclusion that he is probably not going to find much. ]
[Quin frequently spends her evenings here. In fact, even last week she'd been heading back from a late evening dive into the books when... Well, when the stage for the grizzly scene the next morning had been set.
Tonight, however, she'll be packing up shop a little bit earlier than she had had the week before, wanting to see for herself if the distortion has spread to their newly discovered icon.]
Doing a bit of light reading? Do tell me if the answer of the universe present themselves to you.
[Definitely not. In that case, she's pleased by the familiar face and a bit disappointed to see that he still hasn't found anything and has moved on to his mongoose novella.]
I shouldn't be surprised by now. Sometimes the most lucrative treasure are in the hardest to find places...
No. Especially not now when secrets have started to present themselves in droves.
[ which... is probably not clear in meaning unless she's spoken with haruka today, since zelkov hasn't exactly gone around telling everyone about the mysterious location they uncovered together. ]
It is the meaning behind them that remains out of reach at this moment. Perhaps it is only by uncovering more mysteries that we will be able to piece together the truth that threads them together.
[She does not seem to have been talking to Haruka about any of this, by the way her interest perks right up.
There's room on this little table, surely? Because she's going half-sit on it, doing the dummy thick lean.]
Well! Color me intrigued. Just what sorts of little morsels have you been uncovering in your spare time? I can't believe they would have come from here.
Some say it's nice to solve one riddle before you move on to the other, but my appetite is really more voracious than that.
[ he pauses, seemingly evaluating what he thinks is prudent to reveal. he really doesn't trust waltaquin at all, and doesn't like her much either; but she also seems to be intelligent and proactive... and these experiments on the dead might be at least close to her wheelhouse.
... ]
I take it you did not hear the strange sound coming from behind the waterfall this morning?
[His is, of course, the correct reaction to her, and she won't hold it against him. She will, of course, keep being herself.]
A strange sound? No, I can't say I heard anything out of the ordinary... I spent most of yesterday in the baths, so I've been on a much-needed break from that island today.
[ though it's not impossible that one of them could be some sort of mole, he supposes. ]
It led us to a hidden entrance in the wall of the rock, where it seemed an electronic lock had somehow been disengaged, leaving it temporarily accessible to outsiders... though I am uncertain whether this was sheer carelessness or if it was intentional.
Either way, that may come at some benefit to us. Either someone was empty-headed enough to leave it unattended, or they want us to have information heretofore hidden from us.
[Or it was intentional in a different way...intended to mislead them. There are always diversions and decoys to prevent someone from noticing the real plan of attack.]
Keeping up with this technology unknown to me is a bit difficult...but a lock like that must be closer to the level of the "catbots" than the other things we're accustomed to here.
[She looks at him expectantly, waiting for a continuation.]
[ one of the many reasons why he's wary about it... ]
Yes, it seemed like it. It was certainly more advanced than anything I had previously observed.
[ ...a slight sigh, but he continues. ]
There were a number of machines inside, as well. Judging by the data in the reports we found there, it is some sort of laboratory where experiments on the bodies of the deceased have been being conducted, though we did not actually see any of them there.
this pc is really funny now with the context of zelkov's son
Oho? They've been holding out on us, then. I'd have liked to have seen what they have planned for them. [Who knows? They may have found some use for her expertise.
Though she sounds genuinely bummed that she was not allowed to prod at the bodies of her fellow vacations, Waltaquin continues with the important subject.]
We posited that they may be headquartered somewhere else, inaccessible to us. I'm surprised they'd put such important research in one of the islands they knew we'd be occupying if that's the case.

I will be sure to do so.
[ answered in a complete deadpan. ]
Unfortunately there is little but "light reading".

Not anything one of us caused, was it?

What're they doing with them?
